7 Things You Should Do If You Go Out Boating

Many of us enjoy outdoor activities, such as fishing, water sports, and boating. If you go out in Kansas or Missouri for these activities, you should be very careful, as motor vehicles pose a risk of accidents and injuries. That’s why we want to share with you these safety tips so that your pleasure trip doesn’t turn into a nightmare.  

Check the boat, yacht or jet ski.  

Make sure that any motorized vehicle you use is in good mechanical condition and has been recently maintained. Any failure could be catastrophic.  

If you have never operated the watercraft yourself, don’t hesitate to ask an expert for help. It is better to be safe before you have an accident. 

Don’t fish alone.  

If you are leaving Kansas or Missouri, it is important to have someone who can help you if necessary or who can call for help in case of an accident. Having family or friends know where you are going or where you will be could save your life. Even if your phone doesn’t have a signal so you can communicate from where you are, they will know where to start looking. 

Wear a life jacket.  

Everyone on a boat should wear life jackets, no matter how well they can swim. It never hurts to have protection to avoid an accident. 

Check weather conditions.  

Nowadays technology allows us to obtain very accurate and specific weather forecasts for each area, so a good practice is to consult these forecasts before embarking on a boating trip and thus avoid unnecessary risks.  

Remember that it will not be the same weather you are used to in Kansas or Missouri, so be prepared for any type of weather conditions.  

Take enough utensils, tools and food.  

Don’t forget to bring maps, flashlights, flares, basic tools, cell phone, food and water.  Stay hydrated at all times, as you could suffer from sunstroke while at sea, and always use sunscreen with UV protection to avoid sunburn. 

Remember that prolonged exposure to the sun can cause serious burns, not to mention the side effects caused by sunstroke. 

Wear appropriate clothing and footwear.  

Depending on the type of activity you are going to do, it is important to select the right footwear to avoid slipping, falling or other accidents. Likewise, wear cool clothing that allows your body to perspire, so you will not suffer from heat stroke.  

Always carry a hat and sunglasses with you; as we already mentioned, UV protection is essential, additional protection is not superfluous. 

Beware of sharp objects.  

Keep knives, tools and other sharp objects when they are not in use, cover knives well at all times and do not allow a minor to handle them. 

Remember to carry a medical kit with you in case of emergency, being forewarned is always better than requiring a bandage and not having it.
